In this immersion on the heart we study the anatomical heart and practice postures related to opening the chest. We map the energetic meridians of the heart and pericardium from Chinese medicine as they relate to the arms and upper trunk. We study the way blood circulates through the heart /lungs and practice upper chest openers including back arches and inversions. We will couple this study of the anatomical heart with the great heart wisdom that is expressed in the Heart Sutra (Prajnaparamita). The Heart Sutra contains the pivotal teachings of the Buddha. It is at both inspiring and enigmatic and it provides clear and penetrating insight into the nature of the mind/body. By studying, chanting and meditating on the Heart Sutra we gain insight into the key teachings on transience, non-clinging and heart wisdom. Recommended reading prior to this course: The Heart of Understanding by Thich Nhat Hanh and Essence of the Heart Sutra by the Dalai Lama.

In hatha yoga, Tias’ primary influences are in Iyengar and Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Tias’ teaching expresses mindfulness in asana and he believes the asana forms are preparation for meditation in order to abide in what is called in Zen, our “original brightness”. He is committed to teaching yoga as a contemplative path, leading to greater sensitivity, tolerance and deep understanding (prajna). Tias’ teaching specializes in yoga and anatomy, blending both Western and Eastern perspectives. He is a licensed massage therapist and has studied extensively in cranial-sacral therapy and bodywork. Tias earned a Masters degree in Eastern Philosophy from St. John’s College.
